Hi Folks, our next book is the True History of the Kelly Gang. We will be meeting at Judy Best's home on Tuesday, January 25th at 6:30 pm. Please bring an appetizer and or a beverage to share.
Just got it last night, finally! I am leaving on Monday for San Diego so my goal is for everyone to get a copy before Monday. I am in Seattle on Friday, Saturday I'm snow shoeing; however, I will leave the kit inside the front stoop at the house if I can't get it too you before then.
Questions and or discussion ideas to ponder while reading the book:
1. How many Irish folk tales can you find throughout the novel? Do these tales help the Irish folk blend with the Australian's or does it hinder them from truly becoming Australian.
2. The story is written specifically to be poorly punctuated and ungrammatical to fully represent the times and the language- did you find this helpful or difficult to understand?
3. Is Kelly free to choose his lifestyle or is he forced into crime?
4. Are there parallels between Australia of the novel and America? Are there parallels to Ireland?
5. Terrorism is very real in this novel, who are the Sons of Sieve and how do they affect/ shape the story? Do they have an effect on behaviors or attitudes?
I am having a really difficult time getting through this book - anyone else? I don't mind the sentence structure (or lack of), but I find it so filled with misery that I read a few pages and have to find something uplifting to read. Does it get any less so???? I need motivation.
Flo mentioned there is a movie tie-in. It is called Ned Kelly and is available on Netflix Instant Play.
ReplyDeleteRegina, did you get a kit from the library to share?
ReplyDeleteI guess you can't change a username in google, you have to create a new one. I'll do that later. Julie
